Question / Issue |
Who can authorize the release of a transcript to be picked up by someone other than the student? |
Answer / Solution |
The family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, requires that we have a written release from the student with the student's signature who would name the individual to release the transcript The transcript would be issued to the person indicated by the student in the written request. This requirement may be waived only if the requestor is the legal guardian of the student whose record is being requested and has claimed her/him as a dependent on their tax return. A copy of the tax return will be required or a copy of the "power of attorney" document. In such case, the transcript will be issued to the person holding the authorization. |
